The Korea Dohwa Engineering Co.Ltd and the Korea National Railway, Soosung Engineering, and Korea Railroad Corporation partnership were selected as the consultant for the project to build the large-capacity public transportation vehicle “Metro”. Within this framework, the Technical and Economic Basis (FES) developed by JICA in 2013 has been completely updated, and a total of 6 engineering-geological and other basic research works have been completed.
For example, geological drilling was carried out at 42 points in Ulaanbaatar city, at a depth of 30 m every 500 m along the metro route, and a basic analysis with soil samples was conducted. In addition, data analysis was conducted based on hydrogeology, environmental status assessment, passenger traffic research, and transport demand research, and the newly developed Feasibility Study was discussed by the Railway and Maritime Transport Sector Subcommittee under the Science and Technology Council of the Ministry of Roads and Transport.
The revised feasibility study was discussed and supported by a professional council in stages, and by order of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, an interdisciplinary extended working group was established and the feasibility study was 100% completed.
The Ulaanbaatar metro project will have a 19.4 km long line from Tolgoi to Unity Park, 15 stations and a maintenance depot. Once operational, it is estimated that it will transport 17,200 people per hour in one direction during peak hours.
