The Concept Design for Construction works of the High-capacity public transportation project "Metro" was approved by the Chief Architect of the Capital city on February 20, 2025. This conceptual design consists of six main components.
Note: The Detailed Design will be developed by the EPC contractor, so all information presented here is at the conceptual level only and may be subject to change.
The Ulaanbaatar Metro project consists of a single 19.4-kilometer line, with 15 stations and a maintenance depot.
The distance between stations ranges from 800 meters to 1.7 kilometers. The closer the stations are, the easier it is for passengers to get on and off the train and the less walking they have to do. However, if the stations are too close, the metro will stop frequently and the speed of the train will slow down. Therefore, the average distance between metro stations in our country is planned to be 1.3 km, which is a decision based on global experience and advice from professional consulting companies.
Initially, in the Feasibility Study prepared by JICA in 2013, the metro was planned to have 14 stations, but in the revised feasibility study, the number was increased to 15. Also, considering the advantages of urban development, the environment, road transport and land acquisition, 14 stations will be underground and 1 will be above ground.
